Three excellent programming books are available free for download at Bruce Eckel's Mindview site. The "Thinking in" series, (Thinking in Java, Thinking in C++ and Thinking in Python) are not so much about the details of the language (which they have) and more about the mindset that one should have to effectively program in those languages. Alas how many of us are still writting procedural code in an Object oriented language. These books will help break those bad habbits.
