Poor boy - leaves moon-viewing for rice-grinding Haiku 74 -Basho I'm reading "Seeing in the Dark" by Timothy Ferris, author of the the excellent "Coming of Age in the Milking Way" and Galaxies (one of the best book bargains I ever bought). "Seeing in the Dark" is about how the study of astronomy, originally the domain of the amateur, became professionalized (sic) in the age of Hubble, CCD imaging and adaptive optics. Astronomy has now re-discovered a role for the commited and diligent amateur doing the work that the professional can't or won't do. A more extensive review will follow.
