Is there any issue more important to society than education? Every other issue, Health Care, Public Works, technological innovation and even defense depends upon having educated, well-informed citizens. While people may differ in their opinions on how to achieve those ends, it should remain the last area of public spending where cuts are made. Here in Toronto, a forensic auditor has made the call to close swimming pools, adult education centres, eliminate 2/3rds of the lunch room supervisors and all the outdoor education centres. "To some trustees, virtually every societal issue is thought to have education roots," said Al Rosen. I think those trustees are a lot closer to the truth than a government that sees cutting corporate tax rates as the solution to all societal problems. Rob Lowe's character on West Wing in the "Six Meetings before Lunch" says it clearly: "Education is the silver bullet. Education is everything. We don't need little changes, we need gigantic changes. Schools should be palaces; the competition for the best teachers should be fierce; they should be making six figure salaries. Schools should be incredibly expensive for government and absolutely free of charge to its citizens, just like national defense."
