Our local school board (Toronto) has been taken over by the provincal government because the elected school board officials refused to make the cuts demanded by the decreased provincial funding. Much has been written in the local papers by supporters of the Tory government about the wasteful spending in the Toronto school board. In comes the hired gun (auditor Al Rosen) to make the cuts for them. Are we now going to see him slashing wasteful administrative spending, lavish perks for the trustees, teachers memberships in country clubs? Apparently those cuts were no where to be found. Instead we get $13 million saved by only doing emergency maintenance on schools (no need to save money by doing preventative maintenance), $6.2 million saved by closing all pools (if the kids want pools go to their parent's health clubs), and $9.2 million by cutting text book supplies (it's not as if there was a surplus in text books to begin with). A summary can be found on the Toronto Star
